Black Hen and Black Frizzle Rooster Feathers

You'll receive at least 10 washed, cleaned black feathers from my flock here at Seraphin Station, where our fat, happy chickens get more space to free range than the poor dog gets to run around.

At least one of the feathers will be from my black frizzle rooster. (He's not very big, y'all, and if I tried to assemble 10 of his feathers, we could all be waiting a really, really long time!) My black hens will make up the balance.

In rural conjure, chickens are widely held to be valuable for their ability to scratch up any tricks or messes somebody lays for you in your yard or buries, so they kill the crossing work by scratching it up and then dispersing it as they flap and scratch around.

Any chickens will do, but black chickens are frequently asked after specifically, and *frizzle* chickens are especially prized. (They have a weird feather gene so their feathers curl in the wrong direction instead of lying flat, and this is seen as an indicator of their special aptitude for this kind of thing.)

So by extension, black hen and rooster feathers are also valued. Some folks make whisks or dusters out of them to use in spiritual cleansing. Some old formulas call for bits of black feather, often parched on a stove or fire until they're powder. And they turn up as ingredients in mojo bags and as embellishments on all kinds of spiritual implements and folk art - like for instance the famous chicken foot protection charm.
